Mr. Jesse Weldon Soape was
born January 16, 1929 in Carthage,
Texas. He was the youngest
of seven children born to
the marriage of Jesse James
and Emma Lou Thompson Soape.
Weldon was a graduate of Carthage
High School with the class
of 1946. He was a retired
steel worker with Armco Steel.
Mr. Soape was active politically
with the AFL-CIO as a union
organizer, Steelworkers Local
as an official, arbitrator
and negotiator, Chairman of
the East Harris County Democrats
for many years and served
as Panola County Justice of
the Peace, Pct. 4 from 1978
– 1982. Weldon was active
in the Panola County Historical
Society for many years. Daddy
loved all of his family and
never met a stranger. Because
of the depth of his love for
his entire family, there were
times he felt he had to put
off plans with his children
to go to the aide of his siblings,
nieces and nephews. Daddy
instilled the same love, respect,
and integrity for humanity
in his girls that he himself
possessed. He taught his girls
that one was only as good
as their name, to say what
they mean and do what they
say, to stand for what they
believed and not to waiver,
and that it was ok to agree
to disagree. He fought for
the good of the common man
believing that it would benefit
his kids and
grandkids in the future. The
one for all; all for one philosophy.
