L. Duncan, of Houston,
passed away unexpectedly on
Monday, the 29th of March
2010.

memorial service,
in celebration of Dan’s
life, is to be conducted at
one o’clock in the afternoon
on Tuesday, the 6th of April,
in the Worship Center of Second
Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway
Drive in Houston, where Dr.
H. Edwin Young, Pastor, is
to serve as the lead officiant.
Immediately
following the service, the
family will greet friends
during a reception to be held
in the adjacent Atrium of
the church.
Prior
to Tuesday afternoon’s
service, the family will have
gathered for a private interment
service at Memorial Oaks Cemetery

Barbara Cook, 69, of Joaquin, passed away Monday, March 29, 2010 in Center, Texas.
Services will 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Pine Ridge Missionary Baptist Church , 2657 CR 3000 Joaquin, Texas with Pastor Robert Anderson and Pastor Mark Woolf officiating. She was born Sept. 27, 1940 in Joaquin, Texas. She was a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church and was the church secretary. Barbara was a retired Executive Secretary for many Drs. at the University of Texas in Houston and the University of Utah.
She was preceded in death by her father, John E. Davis and sister, Betty J. Davis of Joaquin and granddaughter Katherine Cook of Brenham, TX.
Mrs. Cook is survived by her mother, Irene Davis of Joaquin, beloved husband of 50 yrs., Albert J. Cook of Joaquin, 4 children; son James A. Cook, age 52 and wife Rebecca of Brenham, TX, son, John B. Cook, age 49 and wife Angie, of Troutman, North Carolina, daughter D’Ann Anderson, age 48 and husband Robert of Houston, TX; son Jerry M. 89, of San Antonio, passed
away Friday, March 26, 2010.
Mrs. Schluens was born Quata
Inez Childress to Earnest
and Annie Childress on February
15, 1921 in Franklin, Texas.
After graduating from Franklin
High School, she took a job
as a secretary in Houston.
After World War 2, she married
Ralph Menefee Jr. of Tenaha.
They lived in Tenaha, where
she had three children: Margaret
Ann (Molly), Richard Timothy
(Tim), and Thomas Stanton
(Tom). In 1960, they moved
to Angleton, Texas, residing
for 6 months with her sister
and her family- Polly, Frank
and William DeBerry. After
6 months, she opened the Dairyland
Drive-In in Alvin, Texas and
moved her family to Alvin.
She owned and operated the
Dairyland with her husband
and children for 23 years.
In 1983, she sold the restaurant
and moved with her husband
to Nacogdoches, Texas. Her
husband Ralph died in June
1983, and one year later,
she took a job at Mize Department
Store, where she sold women’s
dresses. She married Pete
Schluens of Texas City in
1986 and they continued to
reside in Nacogdoches. Three
years later, Pete died, but
she remained in the home until
2006, when she moved in with
her daughter Molly Holland
and Molly's family in San
Antonio. She spent the remainder
of her years in the Holland
residence, and left this Earth
surrounded by her loving family.
Visitation

to 11:00 am, Monday, March
29, 2010 at Watson & Sons

Jimmy
Lamar Ware, 71, of
Nacogdoches, Texas died Saturday,
March 27, 2010 after battling
cancer for the past several
months. Jimmy was born to
Ralph and Katie Ware on October
11, 1939 in Panola County.
After graduating from Tenaha
High School in 1956, Jimmy
attended Stephen F. Austin
where he received a Bachelor
of Science degree in 1959.
He then served proudly in
U. S. Army after graduating
from college for several years
before returning to the states.
He earned a Masters degree
from Stephen F. Austin State
University in 1964. For numerous
years, Jimmy was a beloved
teacher at Deer Park High
School where he taught History.
Jimmy was also an avid sport
fan. He loved football whether
high school , college, or
pro-ball especially the Cowboys.
His nieces and nephews will
remember him for all the fun
times that they had on numerous
family vacations where Uncle
Jimmy was always the best
story teller around the campfire.
Jimmy Lamar Ware was preceded
in death by his parents, Ralph
Lamar Ware and Katie Crump
Ware, and his only daughter
Elizabeth Locke Ware Powitzky
in 2000.

Dr. Milton Wilkinson, 91 of Round Rock formerly of Center, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Cornerstone Hospital in Austin.

He was born October 13, 1918 to Eugene and Letha (Mitchell) Wilkinson. He served in the US Air Force during WWII where he retired as a 1st Lt. He was a former State Resprentative where he served for 2 terms. He served as an International Good Will Ambassador for Lyndon B. Johnson. He was previously the Pastor of Aaron Place Baptist Church in San Antonio,TX , Keatchie Baptist Church and Delhi Baptist Church in Rosanky, TX. He did missionary work in Far East Guam. He was also a Mason and Shriner for over 50 years. In 1971 he was listed in the Community Leaders of America. He was the Superintendent at Leggett ISD and the High School Principal in Zavalla, TX. Dr. Wilkinson held a Bachelor of Science Degree, Doctor of Divinity Degree and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree.
He is preceded in death by his Parents, Eugene and Letha Wilkinson, Wife, Bonnie Hope Wilkinson and Daughter, Phyllis Wilkinson Blackburn.

for many years until he retired
early due to failing health.

Albert
H. Burns, 85,
of Tenaha, passed away Wednesday,
March 10, 2010, at a Nacogdoches
health care facility. He was
born September 30, 1924 in
Tenaha to Robert E. Burns,
Sr. and Ruby Lee Wooten Burns.
Mr. Burns was a member of
the Tenaha Class of 1942,
the year they won the Bi-District
Championship, and a member
of the Tenaha High School
Hall of Fame. Mr. Burns was
a WWII veteran, having served
with the 17th Bomber Group,
34th Squadron in the European
Theatre. He was a member and
past Post Commander of the
American Legion Post 520.
Mr. Burns was a member of
the Men’s III Sunday
school class at First Baptist
Church of Tenaha, and had
been a Deacon there since
1967. He was one of the longest
active licensed real estate
agents in Texas, having owned
and operated Burns Real Estate
since 1947. Mr. Burns was
also the past owner and publisher
of The East Texas Light. For
many years he was a Tenaha
City Council member. He was
a former member and president
of the Tenaha ISD School board,
and very active in public
service. For many years he
was active in the East Texas
timber industry. Mr. Burns
was a trusted steward of Tenaha
and East Texas lore.

Lee S. Garrett was born on

the 8th grade at Buena Vista
Schools. She joined in fellowship
and was a faithful member
until death of New Prospect
Baptist Church, Tenaha, Texas.
Lee
S. faithfully served as President
of the Senior Choir, President
of the Kitchen Committee,
Sunday School Secretary and
Church Treasurer. She worked
as a private housekeeper for
over 40 years. She loved her
employers and they also loved
her. She has often said, "I
put my trust in God- I know
He's able. I want my soul
ready." She lived her
life - she was a Sister, a
counselor, a confidant, an
advisor, someone you could
trust - she was a friend,
and she was ready.
She
was preceded in death by her
parents, Alex and Dollie Garrett;

Nacogdoches.

was born to Sarah (Warr) Holloway
and George Alphus Holloway
on July 22, 1910, in the Ironosa
Community in Shelby County,
Texas. She had lived in the
Chinquapin Community in San
Augustine County with her
family many years ago, and
was a loving homemaker being
a very loving Mother, Grandmother,
and Great-Grandmother to her
children, and grandchildren.
She was a member of the Antioch
Baptist Church in the Blackjack
Community in Nacogodoches
County.

2:00 p.m. at the Wyman Roberts
Memorial Chapel in San Augustine,
with interment following in
the Attoyac Cemetery in San

71, of Nacogdoches passed
away Thursday, February 25,
2010.

Mr. Allen Glenn Hartley was
born July 11, 1938 in Panola
County, Texas to the late
Gertrue Creech Hartley Reeves
of the Galloway Community
and the late William Thomas
Hartley, Jr. of Carthage,
Texas. Allen was a graduate
of Carthage High School with
the class of 1958. He served
his country willingly and
proudly in the U.S. Marine
Corps and the U.S. Army retiring
after 30 years of faithful
service with the rank of Major.
He also retired from the city
of Nacogdoches Water Department
and the Nacogdoches Post Office.
He loved his Country, his
family, traveling all over
the world making many friends
along the way, fishing and
hunting and visiting with
his many friends. One of the
most resent highlights of
his life was attending the
50th reunion of his High School
graduation visiting with his
many friends of his past.
Mr. Hartley was a member of
the Masonic Lodge #579 of
Columbus, Georgia, achieving
the status of Master Mason.
He was a kind gentle man,
loving husband, father and
grand father that will be
greatly missed. .

Lynn Cooper, 53,
of Orange, died Sunday, February
28, 2010, at St. Elizabeth
Hospital in Beaumont.
Funeral
services will be 10 a.m. Thursday,
March 4, 2010 at Claybar Funeral
Home Chapel in Orange. Officiating
will be Rev. Johnny Harrison
of First Christian Church
of Sour Lake.
A
graveside service will begin
at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Duncan
Cemetery in Shelbyville.
Visitation
will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday
at the funeral home.
Born
in Orange, Texas on July 16,
1956, Rodney was the son of
Earnest Edgar Cooper and Ruth
Jeanette Duncan. Rodney wworked
as a driller on a drilling
rig and loved hunting, fishing
canoeing, camping, and rebuilding
computers. Rodney deeply loved
his family, grandchildren
and family pets.
He
was preceded in death by his
parents: and brother, David
Eugene Cooper.
Rodney is survived by his
wife of 24 years, Carol Cooper;
daughter adn son-in-law, Alisha
and Jerry Utley of Silsbee;
and son Davey Cooper of Bonham.
Also
surviving are his grandchildren,
Zackary Wayne Utley; and sisters
and brother-in-law, Earnestine
and Lonnie Peveto of Orange,
Peggy and Tommy Snider of
Oranger, Barbara and Eddie
Head of Orangefield, Teresa
Whittaker of Orange and Shelia
Barber of Orange.

Reba
January James, 77,
of Center, passed away Monday,
March 1, 2010 at her residence.
Her
wishes were to be cremated.
No services are planned at
this time.
She
was born October 6, 1932 to
Condy and Maude (Evers) January.
She was a member of the Daughters
of the American Revolution,
Daughters of the Republic
of Texas, Daughters of 1812,
and the Daughters of the Confederacy,
where she served as an officer
in each organization. She
was very active in the Shelby
County Historical Society
and she also spent much time
with the renovation of the
Shelby County Court House
and in research for the Shelby
County Museum.
She
is preceded in death by her

Leon Rushing, 55,
passed away Thursday, February
25, 2010 in Houston. Nicky
was born in Center, Texas
February 19, 1955, the son
of Albert and Dura Mae Wheeler
Rushing.
Nicky
was a graduate of Center High
School and went on to graduate
from Stephen F. Austin. He
taught school for over thirty-two
years, spending the last twenty-eight
of them at Hardin Middle School
teaching science and computers.
Nicky loved to ride motorcycles
as well as work and repair
computers.
He
was preceded in death by his
brother Albert Earl Rushing.
He leaves behind his devoted
wife of twenty-seven years

Margaret Prycer Eakin was
one of 11 children born to
Andy & Minnie Beasley
Prycer. She attended boarding
school at St. Joseph’s
Catholic School in Marshall,
Tx. She later moved to Jacksonville,
Tx. where she graduated high
school and assisted her mother
in running the Prycer Dairy.
Her mother moved the family
to Timpson, where Margaret
met the man she would marry,
John Herbert Eakin. The two
were married December 24,
1936 in Nacogdoches, Tx. at
the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church. The couple celebrated
their 62nd wedding anniversary
in 1997. Margaret was a wife,
mother, grandmother, and worked
many years at Timpson ISD
as a teacher’s aide
and librarian. She enjoyed
traveling, sewing, crocheting,
was an avid reader, hosting
family reunions, and collecting
red dishes.
