She was born March 21, 1922

was a homemaker, mother and
grandmother. She was a member

She was born June 17, 1934
in Patroon, Texas to James
J. Andrews and Iva Mae Ogden.
Mrs. Lawson worked as a nurse
for over 35 years, 30 of which
were at Holiday Nursing Center.
She was a member of the Red
Hat Society. Mrs. Lawson was
a member of the First Baptist
Church where she was also
a member of the Rachel Sunday
School Class.

Jewel was

She was a Food Service Supervisor

where she was an officer for

Adams Dickey was born on May
8, 1947, in Texarkana, Arkansas.
She was the adopted daughter
and only child born to the
marriage of James Lowell and
Jessie Lema Lollar Adams.
She was the maternal granddaughter
of Gordon T. Lollar and Amanda
Ratcliff Lollar and the paternal
granddaughter of Rubin R.
Adams and Emma Lee Dingler
Adams.
She grew
up in Texarkana, Texas and
had a happy childhood, living
next door to the family owned
grocery store. She attended
Beverley Elementary School,
graduated high school at Texas
High, and attended Texarkana
College. She later completed
her education at Central Western
University. Active in the
music industry for many years,
she was one of the first women
to break into the field of
record promotion, winning
several awards for her accomplishments,
including the prestigious
Association of Independent
Radio’s Promoter of
the Year in 1986.
She
married Dan Benjamin Dickey
on April 7, 1967, in Sherman,
Texas. Emily was a lifelong
member of the United Methodist
Church. In high school, she
was a member of the Methodist
Youth Fellowship, Girl Scouts,
and Rainbow Girls. As an adult,
she was a member of the Young
Homemakers of Texas and was
active in the community, doing
volunteer work in nursing
homes and the schools where
her children attended. Her
hobbies included playing the
piano, bowling, sewing, and
gospel music. Later in life,
until stricken by a disabling
stroke, she touched many lives,
helping the elderly and shut-ins
by assisting with shopping
and personal chores and sharing
her Christian testimony. She
was preceded in death by her
parents.
Mrs. Dickey
is survived by her husband
of 43 years, Dan B. Dickey
of Joaquin; t hree daughters,
Angela Grupp and husband Jeff
of Rowlett, Monica Bishop
and husband Shawn of Carthage,
and Melanie Kitchens and husband
Jason of Aurora; and five
grandchildren, Ashley Grupp,
Tiffany Grupp, Faith Kitchens,
Berlin Kitchens, and Aspen
Bishop.

College where he received
a degree in Agriculture and
a Masters in Education in
1950. Dock served in the US
Air Force for a brief time
during the Korean Conflict.
Dock returned to Shelby County
and married Fannie Baldwin.
Their 58
year marriage blessed them
with three children. He is
survived by wife, Fannie Watson
and daughters: Brenda &
husband, Gene Giles of Carthage,
Glenda & husband, Charlie
Leflett of Joaquin and Steven
Joe Watson of the Paxton Community.

Action. From 1945 until 1981
he also operated S. S. Watson
Dairy. Dock served as Tenaha
School Superintendent from
1967-1982. Following, he served
as Joaquin ISD Superintendent
for five years. Dock was elected
Shelby County Judge in 1982
where he served for sixteen
years. Dock served on many
boards: Paxton Water Supply,
Shelby County Hospital Board,
Deep East Texas Council of
Government, Deep East Texas
Electric Co-Op Board of Directors,
Resource, Conservation and
Development Council, Shelby
Panola College Advisory Board,
and the Shelby Soil Conservation
Committee. Other business
ventures were Toledo Finance,
Shelby County Savings and
Tenaha Milling Company.
He was
awarded the Shelby County
Distinguished Citizen of the
Year in 1994. In 1995 he received
the Sam Samford Lodge #149
Community Builders Award.
Tenaha ISD inducted him into
their Hall of Honor in 2004.
Dock also received the Tenaha
Masonic Lodge Community Builders
Award in 2008. Close to his
heart was the restoration
of the 1885 Shelby County
Courthouse and working with
Shelby County citizens.

born December 18, 1935 in
Denton, Texas to William and
Phadolia (Matthews) Shepherd.
Mrs. Oates, was a woman with
an outstanding record of service
to her fellow citizens and
worked continuously for bettering
the lives of those living
in the community. Mrs. Oates
was a registered nurse and
worked alongside her husband,
Dr. Steve Oates for many years.
She was dedicated to the many
activities her two sons, Reid
and Shepard were involved
in. She was a scout leader
as well as very involved in
the Little League organization
and Athletic Boosters. She
was a member of Beta Sigma
Phi and the Women’s
Reading Club. Mrs. Oates,
was first elected to the City
of Center Council in April
12, 1982, serving continuously
until her death, and was appointed
Mayor Pro tem a member of
the City Council Committees
for Financial/Audit, Streetscape
Steering, Parks, and also
represented the Council on
the Board of Directors for
the City of Center Economic
Development Corporation and
the Center Industrial Development
Authority, and the Chairman
of the City of Center Main
Street Program. Mrs. Oates
also served as Chairman of
the Fannie Brown Booth Library;
Vice Chairman of DETCOG, member
of the DETCOG Grant Review
Committee. Mrs. Oates was
very active in the community.
She was a charter member of
the Lake Areas Art League.
Mrs. Oates served as the President
of the Shelby County Chamber,
and was Chairman of the East
Texas Poultry Festival for
over thirty years, Ambassador
President, active Ambassador,
Endowed the East Texas Poultry
Festival Queen’s Court
Pageant, served on the Queen’s
Court committee and served
on the Health Care committee.
Mrs. Oates received the Outstanding
Young Woman of the Year award
in 1976 and the Distinguished
Service Award in 1993, member
of the Ladies Reading Club,
Mrs. Oates was appointed by
Governor Ann Richards to be
on the board of the Executive
Women in Texas Government
.
She is
preceded in death by her Parents,

Doris
Gertrude Wagner passed
away peacefully at her residence
on May 10, 2010. Doris was
born on Oct. 13, 1919 to George
and Merinda Chorpening on
the family farm north of Alamo,
TX. She was a graduate of
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High
School and the University
of Texas. During WW II, Doris
worked for the F.B.I. in San
Antonio and had very fond
memories of her co-workers
and friends.
She married
Paul F. Wagner on March 8,
1946 after he returned from
military service in WWII in
the South Pacific. Paul passed
away July 12, 2004. Doris
was a proud member of P.E.O.
Chapter DS, a philanthropic
educational organization,
for over 60 years and served
as local chapter president
numerous times. She loved
to play bridge with her many
friends, often playing two
to three times a week. Doris
was an “old time”
cook as she had an uncanny
ability for putting up vegetables
and her delicious fruit preserves.
Her sons will greatly miss
her succulent fried oysters
and Christmas candy.

survived by three sons and

Cemetery, Timpson. Mr. McWilliams
passed away May 8, 2010, in
Garrison, TX.
Born in
the Bobo Community of Shelby
County, Texas, Thomas Lamar
McWilliams was the son of
the late Thomas Lee and Lillie
(Wilson) McWilliams. He and
Quinteen Green were married
November 9, 1936. Lamar retired
as a division supervisor for
Texas Gas after 48 years of
service and was a veteran
of the U.S. Army. He was a
member of First Baptist Church,
Timpson, serving as a deacon
and church treasurer, and
was also a member of American
Legion Post #90 in Timpson.
Survivors
include his daughter Linda
Bills and husband Bill of
Brentwood, TN; grandson James
Lamar Bills and wife Lara
of Beckley, West Virginia;
granddaughter Laura Fay Bills
Essner and husband Jon of
Nashville, TN; great grandchildren:
Sara Margaret Bills, Calloway
Reeves Bills, Jay Thomas Essner,
and Bryce Patrick Essner;
and sister-in-law June Mims
of Timpson.
In addition

was preceded in death by wife

Georgia
Marquette Wallace Emanis Oliver
Marquette
“Coot” Oliver passed away on May
7, 2010 in Center, Texas at
the age of 92. Marquette,
one of eight children, was
born on December 8, 1917,
in the Arcadia Community of
Shelby County, to parents,
Frank Wallace and Flossie
Mae Pate Wallace.
Marquette attended Cooper
school until she was 16. She
then traveled alone to Freeport,
Texas where she worked in
a hospital while finishing
high school. Her dream was
to become a nurse. That dream
didn’t materialize until
she was in her 50’s
when she finally obtained
her LVN license from the Panola
Nursing School. She then worked
at Shelby General Hospital
and other local nursing facilities
for a number of years.
Marquette married Rebel Eloy
Emanis, also of Arcadia, where
they farmed for a short time
and their first child Jackie
was born. They moved to Freeport
where Eloy worked at Dow Chemical
and their second child, Ronald
Eloy Emanis, was born.
Around 1951, the Emanis Family
moved back to Arcadia where
Marquette enjoyed cooking,
gardening, sewing, and quilting.
In 1982, at the age of 70,
Eloy passed away. Marquette
later rekindled her friendship
with Olen Oliver who also
grew up in Arcadia. The two
were married August 9, 1987
in Timpson. They had been
married for 23 years and lived
in Center. She was baptized
a member of the Arcadia Missionary
Baptist Church and was a long
time member of the Timpson
Missionary Baptist Church.
Marquette Oliver was preceded
in death by her parents, Frank
and Flossie Wallace; first
husband, Eloy Emanis; brother
Jesse Franklin; and sister
Vada Mae Tinsley. She is survived
by her husband, Olen Oliver
of Center; daughter, Jackie
Emanis Grant and husband Neil,
of the Arcadia Community;
son, Ronnie Emanis and wife
Charlsey, of Center; three
stepsons, Olen Oliver Jr.
and wife Linda of Pasadena,
Jim Oliver and wife Glenda
of LaPorte, and Richard Oliver
and wife Vickie of Houston.
Also five grandchildren, Doice
Grant and wife Beth of Longview,
Dr. Derek Grant and wife Ann
of Center, Greg Grant of Arcadia,
Kerry Grant Greer and husband
Reed of Melissa, Texas, and
Aleta Whitton and husband
Jeremy of Center; 10 great-grandchildren;
5 step grandchildren; 12 step
great-grandchildren; three
sisters, Marguerite Adams,
Sue Hagler, and Marsha Askew;
two brothers, Bud Wallace
and wife Billie, and Joe Wallace
and wife Elaine; also numerous
nieces, nephews, and a host
of other family members and
friends.

Watson and Son Funeral home
in Center Saturday May 8 from
6:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services

9 at 2:00 pm at Watson and
Sons Funeral Home.
Mrs. Oliver will be laid to
rest with generations of family
members gone on before at
the Pleasant Grove Cemetery
near the Arcadia Community.
Her children and grandchildren
will provide a musical farewell.

John
A. White, Jr., 89,
of Tenaha, passed away Friday,
May 7, 2010 at his home. He
was born July 31, 2020 in
Tenaha to John A. White, Sr.
and Mary Belle Holt White.
At the age of 10, John took
up the guitar and, in a very
short time, was accompanying
the local fiddler at dances.
At the age of 15, he enlisted
in the Civilian Conservation
Corps and became the camp
rhythm guitarist for Camp
Maydell, located between Rusk
and Palestine. He was a founding
member of “The Bluegrass
Ramblers” in the early
60’s. For years he played
extensively all over Texas
with some of the best fiddler
and banjo players. His love
of singing and playing the
guitar never ceased. He graduated
from Tenaha High School in
1938 and married Mayzell Samford
on May 19, 1939. Mr. White
worked as a welder in the
shipyards in Baltimore, Maryland,
and in Houston, before World
War II. He was then drafted
and served in the US Navy
aboard the battleship “USS
Mississippi” in the
Pacific Theatre, where he
was an eyewitness to the Japanese
surrender in Tokyo Bay on
September 2, 1945. After the
war, Mr. White moved to LaPorte,
where he worked as a welder
for Shell Oil Company. He
was eventually promoted to
the position of “welding
specialist” and wrote
all the weld procedures for
pressure equipment for Shell
nationwide. In April 1981,
Mr. White retired from Shell
after 34 years of service
and moved to Lake Murvaul,
near Gary, where he and Mayzell
enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Phyllis
Brewer Graves of
Shreveport passed peacefully
on May 6, 2010. She was born
on December 20, 1939, in New
Port Rhode Island. As a daughter
of career naval officer, she
spent her childhood in locations
throughout the United States.
Phyllis dedicated her life
to service, both as a nurse
and a teacher.
Phyllis
received her bachelor’s
degree in nursing from Northwestern
State University 1961, master’s
degree in public health from
Tulane University in 1965
and doctoral degree in nursing
from the University of Alabama,
Birmingham in1979.
After becoming
a nurse, she began working
in a hospital operating and
recovery rooms. She also worked
as a public health nurse,
including working with handicapped
children services. Phyllis
became a nursing educator
in 1965. Phyllis served for
one year as an instructor
at the Louisiana State Universality
School of Nursing in New Orleans,
two years as an instructor
at Confederate Hospital School
of Nursing in Shreveport and
two years as an instructor
at the LSU School of Medicine
in Shreveport. She was a member
of Northwestern State University
faculty in Shreveport, Louisiana
from 1975 to 1986, where she
served as a professor and
head of the baccalaureate
nursing program. A published
author of textbooks and articles,
Phyllis was a member of the
American Nurses Association,
American Public Health Association
and Sigma Theta Tau. She served
on numerous professional committees
and was a founding member
of the Shreveport Mayor’s
Women’s’ Commission.
Phyllis
enjoyed traveling, reading
and, as is said in south Louisiana,
“passing a good time.”
Phyllis
is survived by her loving
husband, Reggie Graves, brother,
Charles Brewer and family,
son, Bob Graves and wife Kathy
and grandchildren, Morgan
and Ellis.
A memorial
service celebrating Phyllis’
life will be held at King’s
Highway Christian Church in
Shreveport on Saturday, May

Laura
Margaret (Putnam) McLarry passed away on May
5, 2010 at Holiday Nursing
Center in Center, Texas where
she had resided since 2007.
Mrs. McLarry was born November
27, 1916, in Sulphur Springs,
Texas to Charles W. and Margaret
Frances Putnam. On January
16, 1942 she married Finley
McLarry in Sulphur Springs
where they lived until his
death in 1997.

of life for Mrs. McLarry will

as a secretary for Sulphur
Springs Independent School
District in the high school,
junior high and Houston Elementary.
She loved to paint and was
a member of Hopkins County
Art League and Lakes Area
Arts League in Center, Texas.
She enjoyed reading, sewing,
gardening and crafts. She
was a member of First Baptist
Church Center, Texas when
she died and a long-time member
of First Baptist Church in
Sulphur Springs, Texas. Throughout
her life she was active in
Baptist Women's Missionary
group and taught women's Bible
study classes for over 50
years.
