Bob and Doris Bowman, Guest Speakers of Shelbyville Fluttering Page Reading Club - October 7, 2009
by Jami Mosby, Secretary

Wednesday, September 30 was the day of the third meeting of Shelbyville High School's Fluttering Page Reading Club, with 25 members present. Guest speakers were Bob Bowman and his wife Doris, who gave us information from some of his books. In his introduction, he began with some humor from his book Bob Bowman's East Texas: 124 Stories You Might Not Know If You Didn't Read This Book. He also told a funny story about his grandpa, Jim Bowman, who loved peach cobbler. He was on his death bed and exclaimed, "I am ready to meet my maker"! His last wish was to have his grandson, Bob Bowman, to bring him one last bowl of his wife's peach cobbler. When he went down stairs to get it from his grandmother, she said "He can't have any because it's for the funeral tomorrow". Mr. Bowman also described some very interesting East Texas characters in his books, some of which are well known, and some who are not. He closed out his speaking session by saying, "Even though we are small, in the Lone Star State there is a country called East Texas". Mr. Bowman also brought some of his books for us to look at and purchase, and he and Mrs. Bowman were kind enough to sign them for the reading club members. Some of his books include: Historic Murders of East Texas (Volumes I, II, III, and IV), This Was Angelina County: The Towns We Left Behind, The Mystery of Lady Bountiful, and his latest book, Death by Rope. In the second volume of of the East Texas Murders series, one of the stories included is the "Poisoned Wedding Supper" murders in East Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Bowman are currently working on additional stories about happenings in the East Texas area. The meeting was a big success, and the reading club hopes to have other guest authors in the future. Officers of the SHS Fluttering Page Reading Club are: Taylor Jernigan, President; Verakesha Cartwright, Vice-President; Jami Mosby, Secretary; and Laurie Beth Jackson, Treasurer. Sponsors are Mrs. Winola Ellis and Mrs. Annette Jernigan.
